A letter from the Editor

Dear Friends:
The high level of interest Botanical Art receives these days does not surprise those of us who enjoy its creation or view. Considering it is one of the oldest art forms, it is pretty amazing that it is thriving today with the same, if not more, creative excellence. Tribute to the beautiful world of botanical art is soon to appear in "The Art of Botanicals" by Woman’s Day Special Interest Publication: Gardening & Outdoor Living. The exposé encompasses both current and historic botanical art and artists. I think this issue will be of special treasure to many as it will feature works of six artists, many of whom you know: Mary Bauschelt, Olivia Marie Braida-Chiusano, R. B. Dance, Kate Nessler, Jessica Tcherepnine, Carol Woodin. The magazine is scheduled for newsstand sale Aug. 7 to Dec. 23.

And, here’s more exciting news: The American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA) is planning to open a Sarasota/Miami chapter! The international organization is looking to hold their annual conference in Sarasota (perhaps in 2008). Sarasota hosts The Selby Gardens and Research Lab, Sarasota Opera House, the Sarasota Ballet Company, the Ringling Museum of Fine Art, and The Aslo Theatre Company, numerous art organizations and art galleries, beaches, shops, and more -- certainly enough to keep conference attendees busy.

The timing for this expansion couldn’t be more perfect. My work here in Sarasota with the Ringling School of Art and Design and the development of the new Botanical Art Certificate Program, will help to spread the word of this new chapter. The school is very receptive and encouraging of this enterprise as is the Sarasota Selby Gardens. The ASBA intends to announce the first stages of their Florida expansion plans in their summer newsletter. Please look for it. If you’re not already a member, contact Carol Bolt, Executive Director, cbolt@nyc.rr.com to join and receive this very valuable newsletter.

For all of us, life offers opportunities -- carrots that provoke momentum. I am grateful for the gift of choice and pray for the help of wisdom. For all of us, may the things on the horizon help guide us on our path, “to be what we are, and to become what we are capable of becoming.” God bless. OM
